July 7, 2006

Butler University and the Horizon League will co-host a regional round of the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The selection of Indianapolis as a host site was announced by the Division I Men's Basketball Committee on Thursday, July 6.

The 2009 regional will be the first NCAA basketball championship event to be played in the new Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis. The regional semifinals will be played on Friday, March 27, with the final slated for Sunday, March 29. The two-day event will be a dress rehearsal for the 2010 NCAA Final Four, which will be co-hosted by Butler and the Horizon League.

"Butler University takes great pride in joining with the Horizon League and the city of Indianapolis to host NCAA national championship events," said Butler interim athletic director Jon Hind. "We're pleased that the NCAA Men's Basketball Committee has recognized our past efforts and has selected Indianapolis to host this prestigious tournament."

The 2009 regional will be the 13th NCAA basketball championship event co-hosted by Butler and the Horizon League since 1987. Indianapolis was the site of men's preliminary round games in 1987, 1990, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2005, and the men's Final Four in 1991, 1997, 2000 and 2006. Butler and the Horizon League also co-hosted the women's Final Four in 2005.
