Tom made his mark as a great receiver on the Butler footballteam. In 1972, against Ball State, Tom racked up 211 yards inreceiving on 15 catches. While the yardage record stood until 1990,the 15 catches is still a Butler record. At the end of the 1972season, Tom had amassed 1,031 total receiving yards on 73 catches,becoming the first player in Butler football history with over1,000 receiving yards in a season. He finished his career in firstplace on Butler's all-time list for receiving yards with 1,933 on117 receptions. Tom was named 1971 Indiana Collegiate ConferenceLineman of the Year.
