The 1983 Butler football team completed the regular season withan unbeaten (9-0-1) record and became the first team in HeartlandCollegiate Conference (HCC) history to advance to the NCAA DivisionII playoffs. Coached by Bill Sylvester, who was named Region 3"Coach of the Year," the Bulldogs won the HCC championship, earneda No. 8 national ranking and captured a second consecutive NCAADivision II Rushing Defense national title. Butler traveled to UCDavis, runner-up in the previous year's Division II nationalchampionship, for the national playoffs and fell, 25-6.
