Butler Sports Medicine At A Glance
Butler student-athletes have access to a comprehensive sports medicine program that focuses on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Ryan Galloy, Butler's student-athletes are served by an extensive team of physicians, health care professionals and certified athletic trainers.
The Bulldogs' Sports Medicine facility is located on the west end of Hinkle Fieldhouse, between the men's and women's basketball offices. Renovation in the summer of 1998 effectively tripled the usable area devoted to promoting the welfare of Butler's student-athletes. It is divided into four areas: rehabilitation and injury management, athlete preparation, administration and storage and is fully equipped to provide for thorough rehabilitation.
Butler's sports medicine staff, which includes Galloy, associate athletic trainers Chris Tinkey and Caren Walls and assistant athletic trainers Aaron Bogenschutz, Mike Howell, and Lauren Mitchell, along with a yearly certified intern athletic trainer, provides care for Butler student-athletes in the areas of injury prevention, rehabilitation, nutrition, and many other wellness issues.
Butler's sports medicine program utilizes the extensive medical network in the St. Vincent Hospital system, which boasts one of the largest and most knowledgeable groups of sports medicine professionals in the nation. Butler student-athletes also have access within this network to St. Vincent Sports Performance and its world-renowned comprehensive care facilities in the Indianapolis area.
Butler Sports Medicine Staff
The members of the clinical staff are all NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC). The full-time employees of Butler University are responsible for the health of their specific sports and hold additional certifications by the American Red Cross and the National Strength & Conditioning Association.

Sports Medicine Mission Statement
Butler University Sports Medicine Program delivers traditional athletic training and sports medicine services to the student-athletes at Butler University. The services to be delivered can be broken down into five domains:

The purpose of the Butler University Sports Medicine Program is four-fold:
- 1. Allow easy access to sports medicine services to each student-athlete.
- 2. Substantially reduce the risk of athletic injury for those student-athletes in our care.
- 3. Enable injured student-athletes to return to their sports as soon as is medically safe.
- 4. Encourage a philosophy of sport that stresses health and wellness.
The underlying philosophy for the sports medicine program is that the needs of the student-athlete shall always be the first consideration for all members of the sports medicine staff. We are committed to ongoing evaluation of our sports medicine program so that our student-athlete can be assured of the highest quality in sports medicine care. Before you begin your trip to Butler University and the Indianapolis area, please view the following information to help make your trip easier and more successful. Butler University Sports Medicine Services:
The following services will be provided for your team while you stay in Indianapolis:
- A certified athletic trainer will be on site for every event and a team physician will be either on site, or on call. You can have full access to the athletic training room for taping and treatment needs.

- A. Freshmen and Transfer Student-Athletes
Butler University Sports Medicine (BUSM) requires all freshmen and transfer student athletes to go through a pre-participation physical examination prior to participating in organized practice or competition. Every athlete must have their physical examination on file in the athletic training room and at Butler Student Health Center. This physical examination is arranged by BUSM and conducted on campus by Butler University Team Physicians in Hinkle Fieldhouse. It is very comprehensive and will identify existing medical problems which might hinder athletic performance/physical health. You must go through this physical exam. A physical from any other physician is not allowed as a replacement for the one conducted by BU Team Physicians. The following are mandated by the athletic department, team physicians and student health center and will be filled out prior to your physical exam:
- 1. Medical History Questionnaire (form provided by sports medicine staff)
- 2. Tetanus Booster or proof of tetanus booster within the last five years (turned into Butler Health Center)
- 3. If the athlete has had any surgery or medical condition that can potentially affect their performance, the athlete is required to attach copies of their surgical procedure or medical condition to their physical paperwork.
- 4. Insurance Information Sheet (sent to student each summer): Insurance form MUST be COMPLETELY filled out and a copy of the athlete's insurance card is also preferably attached to the insurance form. All athletes will not be allowed to participate in athletics (not even try out) until this form is turned in to the sports medicine staff. Athletes should remain covered by their own primary medical insurance for the duration of their athletic participation. It is a Butler University policy that all students must have their own primary insurance. (See Insurance Coverage below)
- 5. Athletes WILL NOT be allowed to participate in athletic competition if their physical packets are incomplete in any manner. Common mistakes include: failure to provide complete insurance paperwork and failure to fully complete medical form.
Finally, Butler University requires that ALL students (athletes and non-athletes) have their immunization records on file at Butler Student Health Center. Students are not allowed to register for classes until Butler Student Health Center receives this information. Upon successful completion of the pre-participation exam the student athlete will be given clearance to practice and participate in all sport related activity including practices, competitions and strength and conditioning sessions. Student athletes will not be permitted to participate if the pre-participation physical is not completed.
Student athletes will be notified by medical personnel if the pre-participation examination is not successfully completed. All costs associated with any tests or medical procedures necessary to complete medical certification will be the responsibility of the student/parent.
- B. Returning Athlete Physical Updates
All returning student athletes are required to complete a medical health update form prior to the beginning of their respective season. Failure to complete this form and consult with a member of the BUSM staff will result in athlete being ineligible to participate in his/her sport. If a new medical condition or injury is listed by the student-athlete on this form, the appropriate arrangements will be made with BUSM Team Physicians to examine the athlete and determine if any course of treatment is needed and whether or not the athlete is medically cleared for participation in their sport.
- C. Walk-on/Tryout Student Athlete Physical
Walk-on student athletes are required to complete a medical history questionnaire, insurance information form, sign the tryout waiver, and obtain a physical within the previous 6 months that clears them for sports participation. For new students, you can secure a copy of his/her entry physical required for admission to the University. Absence of a completed physical within the last 6 months will require the walk on to complete, at his/her own expense, a physical examination by a licensed physician. All costs associated with any tests or medical procedures necessary to complete medical certification will be the responsibility of the student/parent.
We highly recommend that you obtain your physical early for your convenience. Many health plans or medical insurance plans will cover the cost of the physical examination. The Athletic Department cannot pay for any physical examination that is not performed at freshman check-in. Also, any medical bills incurred as the result of an injury sustained during the try out is the financial responsibility of the student-athlete as stated on the try out waiver form. If the walk-on makes the team, then they are required to go through the same physical exam as a freshman or transfer athlete. This again will be conducted by BUSM Team Physicians. Lastly, they must also fill out all required medical paperwork and provide proof of primary insurance before being allowed to participate in any team activities. All athletic injuries should be reported to a member of the BUSM staff as soon as possible after the onset of injury. Failure to promptly report injuries may delay return to activity.
- A. Injury Treatments/Rehabilitation
Student athletes may be required to undergo specific treatment in the athletic training facility in the event of injury. All treatments and rehabilitation will be directed by a certified athletic trainer with periodic consultation with team physicians. Athletes are expected to schedule treatments/rehabilitation around their class schedules and to pay close attention to the operating hours (8am-6pm) of the athletic training facility.
- B. Practice/Competition limitations
All decisions regarding practice and competition participation will be made jointly by the athletic trainers in conjunction with periodic physician consultations. It is the policy of BUSM to avoid putting athletes into situations that are unsafe in relation to their injury. Priority is placed on student athlete safety. Daily communication between the athletic trainers, coaches and athletes is necessary to make appropriate decisions regarding athletic participation. Final decisions are made by BUSM staff.
- C. Physician Referrals/Consultation
Physician visits are a necessary component of the Butler University athlete healthcare system. Decisions regarding physician visits are made by the athletic trainer. An appointment will be scheduled by one of the athletic trainers if physician consultation is deemed necessary. Every effort is made to schedule appointments around class schedules. Transportation to appointments may be either by athletic training staff or athletes' personal vehicle. A limited number of physician consultations may be made in the athletic training room.
Missed doctor's appointments
An athlete missing a scheduled doctor's appointment will be required to reschedule the appointment at their own convenience.
Athletes are welcome to get second opinions regarding medical issues. A member of the BUSM staff must be informed of all appointments concerning second opinions. Insurance coverage may be denied if BUSM has not been notified.
Prescription Medication Policy
Prescriptions may be written by team physicians to athletes on a medically necessary basis. Athletes will need to purchase these prescriptions on their own and submit receipts to the athletic training room for reimbursement. Athletes will not be reimbursed for medication that is for the treatment of non-athletic related injuries. Butler University Athletic Trainers will not distribute any prescription medications without authorization of BUSM Team Physicians.
Over the Counter Medication Policy
It is the policy of Butler University Sports Medicine to dispense over the counter medications as indicated by standing orders from our supervising Team Physicians to Butler University student-athletes and athletic department staff. Over the counter medication (Tylenol, Aleve, Ibuprofen, cough suppressant, and decongestant) will be stocked and distributed by a member of the athletic training staff to athletes as needed. Over the counter medications are stored in a common key access cabinet in the athletic training facility.
Dental or eye injuries resulting from participation in intercollegiate athletics at Butler University are covered under the athletic department secondary insurance policy. Appropriate arrangements will be made with dentists or opthalmologists as needed. Check-ups for the eyes or dental work is to be paid for by the athlete. Spare contact lenses should be given to the athletic training staff if the student athlete uses them or in the event contacts are lost during competition.
Secondary insurance coverage is provided by the Butler University Athletic Department for all athletes. This policy covers any injury occurring while participating in any organized (supervised by coaches) game, practice or conditioning session. This is a secondary policy paying expenses remaining after the athletes primary insurance completes payment of a claim. It is the policy of Butler University that each student must have their own primary insurance. If a student does not have their own primary insurance, the Butler Health Center has a low cost basic coverage option available for purchase through United Health Care. The Butler Health Center number is (317) 940-9385. This insurance will cover non-athletically related conditions not covered by our athletic department's secondary insurance policy. Examples of non-coverable expenses would include illnesses, pre-existing injuries, and injuries occurring outside of a Butler University Athletics organized activity.

- A. Eating Disorders
The athletic training staff is trained to address the initial stages of eating disorders. Access to the Butler University Health and Counseling center is available should further psychological intervention be deemed necessary by Team Physicians. Additionally, other local eating disorder specialists are available within Indianapolis. Complete confidentiality is maintained in these circumstances.
- B. Substance Abuse
All sports will participate in the NCAA year round drug testing program as well as Butler University's own institutional drug testing each semester. Resources are available through the athletic training staff to address those circumstances that may arise in the event of an athlete being identified as having a substance abuse problem. Butler University and the NCAA both utilize the National Center for Drug Free Sport to facilitate their drug testing programs. Other resources include the Butler University Health and Counseling Center and other Indianapolis area facilities. Complete confidentiality is maintained in these circumstances.
- C. Supplements
Butler University does not condone the use of ergogenic aids, creatine powder, amino acids, etc.
- 0. Supplements do not undergo the same quality controls as do medication and they are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Supplements are considered food supplements and do not require the same strict control as medications.
- 1. The claims made by each product are not based on scientific evidence in most products don't rely on scientific research to substantiate their claims.
- 2. The potential adverse and harmful effects of these substances have not been studied, but serious adverse effects have been reported in some instances.
- 3. These substances are sometimes mislabeled. There have been instances of substances which are not listed on the label being contained in the product. It is truly a "buyer beware" market. It is important for you to remember that you are held responsible for each and every substance that enters your body!
The athletic training room is a medical facility and should be treated as such.
Training room rules:
- 1. Use appropriate language.
- 2. No food or cell phones.
- 3. Proper attire; shirt and shoes required.
- 4. Shower prior to all treatments.
- 5. No shoes on tables. All equipment must be kept outside.
- 6. Be on time for scheduled treatments. In season sports take precedence over sports in "non-traditional" seasons.
- 7. Acutely injured athletes take precedence over all others.
