Perfect Veasley Carries Bulldogs Past Wright State

Butler, led by senior Willie Veasley, shot a crisp 67.5 percent from the field and pulled away from Wright State in the second half to win 74-62 Saturday Feb. 6 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Julian Cardona Named To Puerto Rico U21 National Team
Butler forward Julian Cardona has been selected to the Puerto Rico U21 National Team Pool. The first-year Butler player will compete with Puerto Rico in the Central American and Caribbean Games this July in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

BU Falls To #49 Indiana
The Butler men’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to 49th-ranked Indiana Saturday night. Indiana was the third ranked team the Bulldogs have played this season.

Butler Runs Past Valparaiso, 66-52
Senior Melanie Thornton had 17 points, six rebounds and five blocks and BU went on a big second-half run as the Butler women’s basketball team defeated Valparaiso, 66-52, Saturday night. Senior Susan Lester and sophomore Devin Brierly each added nine points.

Bulldogs Host Second Place Wright State
For the third time in four games, league-leading Butler will take on the Horizon League’s second place team when it hosts Wright State on Saturday, Feb. 6. The game, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET), in Hinkle Fieldhouse has been moved to 8 p.m., and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

108 Bulldogs Named To Horizon League Fall Honor Roll
Following a fall season that saw the men’s soccer, football and both cross country teams win championships, Butler posted a league-best 108 student-athletes on the Horizon League Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Matt Howard, Gordon Hayward Named Academic All-District
Butler men’s basketball players Matt Howard and Gordon Hayward have been named to the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V University Division Men’s Basketball Team, chosen by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). It was the second straight year that Howard has been selected, while Hayward made the honor squad for the first time.

Poised Group Finds Way to Win Against Detroit
The experience of the Bulldogs showed as they were able to fight through 21 turnovers to grab a 63-58 victory over Detroit Thursday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler moved to 19-4 on the season and a perfect 12-0 in Horizon League play becoming the first team in school history to start 12-0 in league play.

Bulldogs Travel To Valparaiso Saturday Night
The Butler women’s basketball team, currently third in the Horizon League standings, will take on Valparaiso Saturday, Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. The Bulldogs, coming off a last-second, 71-70 victory at Milwaukee, already own a 57-43 win over Valpo this season. The Bulldogs have won four of their last five games and are one game back of first place in the league.

Butler Opens Season With 1-0 Loss At Western Kentucky
Western Kentucky’s Megan Meinke scored in the 45th minute to give the Butler women’s soccer team a 1-0 loss in its season opener Friday afternoon. Meinke’s game-winning goal, a strike from the left side just outside the box, came at 44:35.

Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) visits Riley Children’s Hospital
Fourteen members of the Horizon League’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee visited Riley Children’s Hospital on Friday, July 31. The community outreach opportunity included guest speakers, a video session and tour of the hospital.

Butler's Hayward creates buzz at 19-and-under national team trials
Butler's Gordon Hayward, who was selected for USA Basketball's 19-and-under national team Thursday, was first featured in the sporting press four years ago. A story in a regional section of the Indianapolis Star profiled Gordon and his twin sister, Heather, who were playing mixed doubles in the Indiana State Open. They were precocious prep tennis stars. She had already played No. 1 singles as a freshman at Brownsburg High; he played No. 1 doubles then, and No. 1 singles the next year. The paper said the twins planned on going to Purdue, their parents' alma mater.

Former Butler men's soccer players are invited back to campus to enjoy a weekend of Homecoming activities, including an Alumni Game on Saturday, Oct. 25. The match between two teams of Butler alums will be held at Varsity Field, beginning at 10 a.m.

Softball, Soccer Players Spark Kids' Interest in Books
It might have looked like a huddle, but reading a story and having fun was the game plan, when outfielder Jenny Jacobs of Indianapolis gathered her "team" of youngsters around her during the Jan. 12 Readers' Day in Hinkle Fieldhouse. A senior member of Butler's softball team, Jacobs read the children's book Click, Clack Moo during a family literacy fair, staged before the Butler men's basketball game against Milwaukee.
