INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler University will add women's lacrosse as its 20th varsity sport with the team beginning play during the 2016-17 academic year. The announcement was made by Butler Vice President/Director of Athletics Barry Collier Wednesday, Oct. 21.
"The addition of women's lacrosse as a varsity sport provides Butler with the opportunity to deepen relationships in portions of the country that continue to be very important to the University, especially Indiana, the Midwest and the East Coast," said Collier. "Women's lacrosse adds to our wide offering of varsity sports, which provide exceptional student-athlete experiences and are a source of pride and unity for Butler undergraduates, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends."
The addition of the program demonstrates Butler's long-standing compliance with Title IX. With the implementation of women's lacrosse, Butler will offer 20 varsity sports – 11 for women and nine for men.
"We look forward to partnering with the lacrosse community locally, regionally and nationally to build a program that will be successful on and off the field for many years," said Collier.
A national search for the program's head coach will begin immediately.
