Butler senior
David Goldsmith has received one of the highest honors in college soccer after being named a second-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Earlier this week, Goldsmith was named an All-Great Lakes Region honoree. From regional selections throughout the country, the NSCAA coaches voted on the All-American teams.
It was another impressive accolade for the talented student-athlete, who leaves Butler with 41 career goals. That is in the top five in Butler soccer history. Last week, Goldsmith was named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the highest individual intercollegiate award administered by the NSCAA, and presented annually at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Goldsmith is one of 15 semifinalists nationally.
The senior from Bristol, England was named the BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year and a unanimous first-team All-BIG EAST selection. He was the leading scorer on the 2016 BIG EAST champions, earning BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player honors as Butler captured the BIG EAST title with wins over Villanova and Creighton. The team captain led Butler to its first BIG EAST title.
Goldsmith finished the season with 12 goals and 28 points, and spent much of the season ranked in the Top 10 nationally in scoring. Earlier this season, he was named the National Player of the Week by the NCAA, NSCAA, College Soccer News, and Top Drawer Soccer for his performance in two matches during the Akron Invitational. He earned weekly honors from the BIG EAST Conference three times this season.
Butler finished the season 13-5-2 and was ranked No. 11 nationally leading into NCAA Tournament after being ranked in the Top 25 for a majority of the season and as high as seventh nationally. He had four game-winning goals as Butler earned the No. 15 national seed in the NCAA Tournament.
