INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler Bulldog women's basketball team will play seven non-conference games at Hinkle Fieldhouse during the 2016-17 season with only four contests coming on the road. Top tier opponents to take the court at Hinkle this winter include South Florida, Ball State and East Tennessee State. All four away games will be challenging for the Bulldogs with Butler playing at Wisconsin, TCU, Arkansas and Green Bay.
"We couldn't be more excited about the level of competition on our schedule this year," Head Coach
Kurt Godlevske stated. "Several of our opponents are programs that receive national recognition. Playing these teams will only help us prepare for the rigors of the BIG EAST Conference."
"This upcoming schedule also features several in-state teams that will travel to Hinkle Fieldhouse," Godlevske added. "Those games will be played against teams that we have battled over the last two years. For a fan of basketball, this is a very exciting non-conference schedule."
Two exhibition games will be played at Hinkle Fieldhouse before the start of the regular season to help BU prepare for the 2016-17 campaign. The 'Dawgs will host Hanover on Sunday, Oct. 30 and follow that game with a matchup against Southern Indiana the following Sunday on Nov. 6. Each exhibition game will be played at 2 PM. The rest of the non-conference schedule does not have set game times. Tip-offs will be finalized closer to the start of the season.
The 2016-17 season opener also serves as the home opener this year with Butler hosting East Tennessee State on Friday, Nov. 11. BU will play three straight-home games (ETSU, Bradley, IPFW) before making their first road trip of the season to Madison, Wisconsin to face the Badgers at the Kohl Center on Nov. 20.
The end of November will feature Butler hosting Central Florida on the 22nd before traveling to Fort Worth, Texas to play the TCU Horned Frogs on the 30th.
Two of the toughest games on the non-conference schedule will be played at home within a two-day span when Butler plays host to South Florida and Ball State in the opening days of December. The Bulls were a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament just one year ago after posting a 23-9 overall record. They defeated Colorado State in the opening round, but would be eliminated by the No. 3 seed UCLA.
Ball State jumped into the WNIT last year after posting a 22-10 overall record. The Cardinals lost AP Honorable Mention All-American Nathalie Fontaine to graduation, but will return four starters from last year's squad.
Two of the final three non-conference games of the year will be played on the road. All three teams were featured on the 2015-16 schedule, but this year BU will play at Arkansas on Dec. 7 and at Green Bay on Dec. 20. Breaking up that road trip will be a home game against Indiana State on Dec. 10.
