INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's soccer team returned to the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory against St. John's.
Paige Monaghan separated the two clubs with a goal in the final moments of the first half. Butler's victory moves them to 10-1-3 on the year with a 3-0-2 record against conference opponents.
Monaghan capped off a wild first half that featured a team save by each side, a shot off the post and a shot off the crossbar. Her fifth goal of the season was a beauty from long range. Monaghan took a pass from
Elena Gutlove and pushed the ball up the far right side of the field. The shot traveled nearly 30 yards in the air and beat the St. John's goalkeeper to the far post.
The first team save was recorded by St. John's.
Breann Pempek put a midrange shot on goal, but a Red Storm defender slid over to keep the game scoreless. Minutes later, St. John's took a run into BU territory and had a deflected shot bounce off the right post.
Butler returned the favor with a team save of their own off a Mariela Jacome header. Moments later
Julia Leonard would nearly score for the Bulldogs but her shot struck the crossbar and bounced out in front of the net.
The second half was more of the same fast-paced action. St. John's really put the pressure on in the final 10 minutes, but the Bulldogs would end the game with one more shot (8-7). Jordan Kamp took the loss for St. John's while the win went to
Hannah Luedtke.
Butler's next match will take place on Saturday, Oct. 14 at DePaul. The contest will stream live on BEDN at 2 PM.
