Butler used two goals from
Brandon Guhl and a clean sheet from
Eric Dick to post a 2-0 win over Lipscomb in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. The match was played at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. With the win, the Bulldogs will travel to No. 16 seed VCU for a Sunday match.
Both of Guhl's goals were assisted by junior
Kieran Geldenhuys. The first goal of the match came in the eighth minute as Guhl collected the long ball up the right side and was able to get a shot over Lipscomb keeper Christopher Zappia, who had come off his line.
Guhl's second goal of the evening and his 12
th of the season came in the 77
th minute and provided the insurance needed as Lipscomb maintained possession for much of the second half. Once again, Guhl took a long pass and was able to get around a defender to beat the keeper 1v1.
Dick and center backs
Joe Moulden and
Eric Leonard would combine with their teammates to post the Bulldogs' ninth shutout of the season. Lipscomb had a 16-9 advantage in shots, but Dick was able to turn away all four shots on goal. The visitors also had a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
This is Butler's fourth all-time win in NCAA Tournament play, and sets up a Sunday showdown with VCU in Richmond, Va. As one of the tournament's 16 seeds, VCU received a first-round bye and the opportunity to host a second-round match.
Butler is now 13-4-2 on the season, while Lipscomb concludes the 2017 schedule with an 11-8-2 mark. Lipscomb earned an NCAA Tournament berth by winning the ASUN Tournament.
Sunday's match at VCU is scheduled for 5 p.m. Additional information on the match will be made available on Friday.
