Four @ButlerWSoccer Players Earn All-Region Honors

2017 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's All-Midwest Region Teams

Kansas City, Mo. – United Soccer Coaches announced 2017 All-Region Teams today. Annika Schmidt and Paige Monaghan earned spots on the All-Midwest Region First Team while Leonie Doege and Shannon McDevitt were named to the Third Team.

These four student-athletes played influential roles in Butler's historic 2017 season. The team reached the NCAA Tournament field for just the second time in school history and set multiple school records.

Schmidt, Doege and McDevitt highlighted a defensive unit that only allowed seven goals, a total that went down as a new school record. The Bulldogs crushed the old school record for shutouts in a single-season (11) by recording 16 in 2017. They won eight consecutive matches from Aug. 27-Sept. 24 to set yet another school record. BU shutout the opposition in all eight games.

Paige Monaghan highlighted the offensive unit that also helped rewrite the record book. Butler recorded 30 points in a single match vs. Chicago State, breaking the old school record of 29 set by the 1991 team. The old assist record also fell in that contest as BU notched 10 assists in the 10-0 win over the Cougars.

Monaghan was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year after leading the team in both goals and assists. The standout junior ended the 2017 campaign with 26 points, registering 10 goals and six assists. She scored four game-winning goals and moved to sixth place all-time at BU with 205 career shots. The First Team All-BIG EAST selection took 69 total shots in 2017, 38 of which were shots on goal.

Schmidt joined Monaghan as a First Team All-BIG EAST selection. The newcomer scored one goal and dished out one assist during her first year on campus. She played alongside Shannon McDevitt on the BU back line. McDevitt ended her brilliant four-year career at Butler as a Second Team All-BIG EAST honoree.

Doege also earned conference hardware earlier in the year by being named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. The true freshman logged 1,038 minutes of action at goalkeeper and only allowed three goals. She set the new single-season school record with a 0.26 goals against average. She led the NCAA in both goals against average and save percentage (.936).
