Butler opened the indoor track and field schedule Saturday afternoon in Fort Wayne at the Mastodon Open.
In the dual meet format, Butler's men posted wins over Xavier, Northern Kentucky and IUPUI in the four-team field. On the women's side, Butler defeated both IPFW and IUPUI. Northern Kentucky, Xavier and Ball State also fielded women's teams in the event.
Sam Robinson and
Luke Russell went 1-2 in the men's long jump; Robinson's leap of 6.52 meters won the event.
The Bulldogs also claimed the top two spots in the 600-meter dash as
Graham Stecz won with a time of 1:21.92, followed by teammate
Jacob Uhl.
Other Bulldogs to claim victories in men's races included
Colton Haymon in the 200 meters (23.06) and the Bulldogs' 4x400-meter relay team.
On the women's side,
Allie Vogeler won the 600-meters in a time of 1:36.45 and
Carson Fields (8.03) won the 60-meter dash, while
Hannah Hartzell took the 3,000 meters in 10:16.34. Fields ran a time of 7.92 in prelims to place her name on Butler's all-time top-10 list.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday, sending representatives to both Indiana's Hoosier Open and the University of Indianapolis's Winter Break Invitational. That is Butler's final competition before 2018.
