STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Erik Peterson and
Olivia Pratt highlighted Butler's performance on the first day of the 2017 BIG EAST Track & Field Championships Presented by Jeep, winning their respective 5,000-meter events.
Peterson won in a time of 14:14.59. Pratt crossed the line first at 16:15.86, winning the event by nearly four seconds.
Finals for Friday included the pole vault, weight throw and long jump, 5,000-meter run, Distance Medley Relay and women's pentathlon. Following the day's competition, Butler's men stand in third, while the women's team is fifth.
Sam Robinson placed third in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.94 meters. Zachary Polk of Xavier defended his title in the event with a distance of 7.49 meters.
Wade Walder finished fourth in the men's pole vault (4.30 meters).
To close out the men's events on the track, Villanova's squad won the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 10:00.07. Butler came in third (
Johnny Leverenz,
Graham Stecz,
Evan Johnson,
Euan Makepeace).
Several Bulldogs positioned themselves for Saturday success in Friday's preliminaries.
Olivia Anderson qualified for both the 800-meter (2:13.91) and mile (4:56.69) finals.
Josephine Thestrup also qualified for the mile final (4:56.69).
Allie Vogeler's time of 57.28 in the 400 meters is a lifetime best, but just outside the time needed to qualify for the event final. It is the second-fastest time on Butler's all-time list.
Tim Vestuto is through to the 60-meter dash final (6.98), while Leverenz's time of 1:51.87 was the top qualifying mark in the men's 800 in advance of tomorrow's final. Vestuto's time is a lifetime best and No. 2 on Butler's all-time list. Makepeace will be part of Saturday's final in the mile (4:22.38). Walder and
Cory Carter qualified for the 60-meter hurdles final.
Both the Marquette men and women are in the lead with 81.5 points on the women's side and 50.0 points on the men's side. On the women's side, Villanova is in second with 50.5 points, while St. John's is in third with 33 points. For the men, Villanova is also behind Marquette with 42 points. Butler is in third with 39 points.
Championship action on the track begins at 10 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles. The full event schedule and meet program can be found on the
