LORMAN, Miss. – The Butler baseball team took a 5-1 loss at Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon to move their overall record to 5-3. The Braves scored three runs in the third and two more in the seventh to earn their fourth win of the season.
Alcorn State opened the scoring in the third inning by scoring three runs off four hits. RBI singles were supplied by Cormier, McMahon and Hamilton. The Braves added to their lead in the seventh as Vives led off with a double to left field. McMahon added another RBI to his stat line and a wild pitch would send Barna home.
Butler made the game interesting in the ninth by loading the bases with no outs. Alcorn State would make a pitching change with the bases juiced and the decision paid off. Lopez took the mound in relief of Skepple and got the next two Bulldogs to strike out.
Tyler Houston erased the shutout by being walked, but a ground out would follow giving Alcorn State the victory.
Belmont earned the win on the mound for Alcorn State by tossing the first seven innings of the game. He walked two and struck out three. The loss went to
Quentin Miller who made his first start of the season for BU. Miller lasted 2.1 innings before handing the game ball off to
Garrett Christman. Christman struck out four over 4.2 innings of work. BU's final arm would be
Luke Johnson. He threw the eighth and tallied one strikeout.
Butler will return to action on March 3 with a single game against Hartford. First pitch is slated for 2 PM.
