The Bulldogs opened the outdoor portion of the 2017 track and field schedule by hosting the Stan Lyons Invitational Saturday. The meet is named for the former Butler coach.
On the men's side, Butler defeated five of the six competing teams in dual meet scoring, topping Wright State, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Loyola, and Xavier. Only UIC narrowly defeated the Bulldogs.
For the women, Butler beat Morehead State, Loyola and Ball State. Xavier, Eastern Kentucky, UIC, and Wright State were also part of the event.
Several Bulldogs registered top-three performances against the field.
Allie Vogeler won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.60, breaking her own school record.
Maddie Westerhoff placed second in the 1,500 meters, clocking a time of 4:42.19.
The Bulldogs went 2-3 in the 1,500 meters as
Evan Johnson finished second (3:57.70), which was just .25 seconds behind Loyola's Connor McCue, and just .01 seconds ahead of teammate
Jacob Priddey.
In the men's 3,000 meters,
Johnny Leverenz clocked a time of 8:24.88, the third runner to cross the line. He ran unattached in this meet.
Matt Lumbar ran a personal-best 8:29.65 in the same event.
Tim Vestuto placed third in the 200 meters and finished fourth in the 100 meters.
The Bulldogs are back in action next weekend, traveling to North Carolina for the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State.
