@ButlerUBaseball Takes 3-2 Loss at Davidson

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The final game of the weekend in North Carolina came down to the wire as Butler and Davidson came together at 2-2 after eight full innings. The Wildcats would step up to win the game in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single back up the middle of the field.

Davidson opened up the scoring with an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the sixth. The game would take a turn in the eighth inning with Butler pushing two runs across on just one hit. Zach Jarosz walked to lead off the inning and would move on to second after a base knock from Houston.

A Wildcat error would allow Jordan Lucio to reach base and for Jarosz to come around and score. Chris Maranto would be intentionally walked after a Hartnagel strikeout which would send Gehrig Parker to the dish with the bases loaded. Parker sent a deep fly ball into center field which allowed Houston to tag up and score, giving BU the slim 2-1 lead.

Davidson would quickly knot the score in the bottom half of the inning as Fortier homered down the left field line. Butler made some noise in the ninth inning by getting two guys into scoring position, but a ground out to second base would end the inning.

BU got the first batter of the ninth out, but Nussbaum shifted the momentum with a single to center. The next batter was walked giving the Wildcats two baserunners with just one out. Robertson flied out to left for out number two, but Fortier would deliver the game-winning hit off Myjak to win the game.

Davidson made three errors on the day, but tallied 10 hits compared to just six from BU. Fortier was the player of the game, going 5-for-5 from the plate with three RBIs and a run scored. His home run in the eighth paired with the single in the ninth proved to be the difference in the outcome.

Connor Mitchell pitched well for the Bulldogs over seven complete innings. He struck out five and only walked two. Danny Pobereyko came in for an out on Sunday, but the loss would fall on Quentin Miller (0-2).

The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday with a 3 PM game at Presbyterian.
