Down a doubles point and a set on most singles courts, Butler mounted a strong comeback to post a 4-3 win over Furman Tuesday afternoon in Orlando, Fla. The win was Butler's second on the three-match Spring Break trip. The Bulldogs are 9-3 on the season.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday against BIG EAST foe Creighton.
"The guys showed tremendous mental toughness and resiliency today," said coach Parker Ross. "To lose the doubles point and the first set in four of six matches, and then come back to beat a very good Furman team takes a tremendous team effort. The guys deserve all the credit today. Every single guy stepped up and contributed to a great team victory."
Spencer Lang (No. 4) and
Ari Gerstein (No. 6) gave the Bulldogs two straight-set wins to give Butler a 2-1 lead in the match. It started the rally.
After a pair of Furman wins to re-take the lead,
Mason Dragos pulled out a three-set win on the No. 3 court to even the match.
"Ari and Spencer played great today. I'm very proud of the way they came out of the gate to take back the momentum of the match," said Ross. "Mason came back from a set down against a very talented freshman and gutted out a hard-fought win to tie the match at 3-3."
Butler's
Mikheil Khmiadashvili and Furman's Cameron Green would decide the match at the No. 2 singles spot. After splitting the first two sets, the match eventually went to a tiebreaker in the deciding set.
"I can't say enough about Mikheil's effort today. The guy is special," said Ross. "He fought off two match points with clutch winners and played so tough down the stretch in the third set breaker. He truly has emerged as the leader of this team and is improving every week. I'm excited to see what this talented team can achieve this year. The sky is the limit."
Khmiadashvili won the deciding match 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8).
