BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Butler women's lacrosse team came up with their first win of the season and the first win in program history on Wednesday night with a 16-13 victory at Gardner-Webb. Haley Hallenbeck led the team to the win column by scoring five goals.
 
BU dominated first half action to build an 11-5 lead at the midway point. Momentum shifted to Butler in the final stages of the opening half with the 'Dawgs scoring five-straight goals. Butler led 6-5 with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half, but a late score spree would put them in the driver's seat.
 
Sydney Pattison scored an unassisted goal to give BU a two-goal lead and Ashley Lizzi would find the back of the net to push the scoreboard to 8-5. Hallenbeck would score her 16th and 17th goals of the season with less than five to play, helping BU double up Gardner-Webb 10-5. The final score of the first half came from Taylor Kinn who scored with 11 seconds left off an assist from Pattison.
 
The two evenly matched teams traded goals at the start of the second half, but the home team would make a huge push and get within one goal after scoring six-straight.
 
Gardner-Webb trailed 14-13 with four minutes to play, but their comeback attempt would fall short. BU got the ball to Hallenbeck with the game on the line and she delivered two late goals to give BU the win. Her shot with 1:16 left put BU up by two and her score off a feed from Emily Annand would finish the game with just seven seconds remaining.
 
Butler will now travel to South Carolina to face Presbyterian on Friday March 10. The match begins at 4 PM.
