Erik Peterson destroyed Butler's school record in the 10,000 meters, running a time of 28:11.02 late Friday night at the Stanford Invitational in California. Peterson's time was 26 seconds better than the previous mark by Julius Mwangi (28:37.10) in 1998.
Olivia Pratt finished 14
th in the invitational/top section of the 10,000 meters, posting a time of 33:46.03. Butler alum Mara Olson was also in the field, running a time of 33:09.13 that was good for seventh.
Both Peterson's and Pratt's respective times also qualify them for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
"With the Indoor Championships just behind us, the objective for Olivia and Erik was just to get a safe qualifying mark for the NCAA first round," said head coach
Matt Roe. "We want to focus on a big training block for the postseason and with tonight's results, we have that luxury.
"If the race was there to run quick, the plan was to take advantage of the situation. If not, I felt he would break the school record with a controlled effort. We were fortunate that the race set up perfectly with strong professionals setting the tempo. Erik looked easy moving with leaders. It was a flawless, historic race."
Peterson's mark is sixth-best in the world this season and the second-best mark in NCAA. The time qualifies him for this summer's U.S. Outdoor Championships. It is the fastest time in Indiana collegiate history.
Earlier in the day,
Euan Makepeace won section five of the 1,500 meters, posting a time of 3:51.49 to narrowly edge Stanford's Ryan Silva by less than .20 seconds. A strong wind hindered faster times in the event during that portion of the day.
"With high winds early in the day, conditions weren't ideal for fast running. The goal was to compete well and try to find a way to win. He jumped the field at the right moment and gained an advantage that could not be overcome. It was a tough and savvy run for him."
A majority of Butler's roster will travel to the University of Cincinnati Saturday to compete.
