Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS – The St. John's Red Storm held a 2-0 lead over Butler on Thursday afternoon for a majority of the contest, but two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning by the Bulldogs would push the game into extra innings. The difference maker in this one would be a base-clearing, three RBI double to left centerfield by Troy Dixon. The Red Storm would take care of business in the bottom of the 10th inning to secure their 24th win of the year. The setback moves Butler to 22-10.
St. John's scored a single run in the third and fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead into the final stages of the game. Josh Shaw led off the third with a double to right center. A sac bunt would move him to third and a single from Michael Donadio would put the Johnnies on the scoreboard first.
The run in the fifth was also generated by Shaw who came up with a one-out single back up the middle of the diamond. He would come around to score off a double down the left field line by Jamie Galazin.
The Bulldogs tried to make some noise in the bottom of the seventh inning, but a beautiful throw from Galazin would keep Butler off the scoreboard.
Harrison Freed would double with Lucio on first to put two runners into scoring position with just one out.
Michael DiViesti would then come to the plate and hit a ball to center. Galazin made the catch and then threw a bullet to the plate where Dixon made the tag on Lucio for the double play.
The Bulldogs would continue to fight however and would push two runs across in the bottom of the ninth.
Garrett Christman led off with a base hit through the right side and
Michael Hartnagel would extend his hitting streak with a double to center.
Cole Malloy entered the game for Christman to run, which put him on third with Hartnagel on second.
The Red Storm would make a pitching change after the extra base hit from Hartnagel and Joe Kelly would get
Gehrig Parker to pop up for the first out of the inning. Lucio would follow in the order and get one run home on an RBI ground out. The game-tying run came home on a passed ball.
Chris Myjak got roughed up in the 10th inning which led to St. John's posting four runs off three hits. He took the loss on the day to move to 1-1.
Each starter performed well with
Jeff Schank getting the nod for Butler and freshman Sean Mooney taking the bump for STJ. Mooney went eight full innings and struck out seven. Schank went six full innings and struck out three.
These two teams will come back to Bulldog Park tomorrow for game two of the three game series. First pitch is set for 4 PM.
