Capping a series of Spring practices, the Bulldogs gathered at the Butler Bowl Friday evening for their annual Blue-White Game. In the offense versus defense affair with a modified scoring system, Butler's offense used a trick play on the final play of the game to take a 65-64 win.
Following a sack by
Chad Burdo and a fourth-down stop, Butler's defense took a 64-54 lead with just enough time on the clock for one last drive. Reserve quarterback
Ryan Young was orchestrating the offense, connecting with
Ryan Gallagher for a 66-yard connection to the Offense's four-yard line. That play awarded the offense several points. Three plays later, Young found
John Turley for a touchdown to pull the Offense within one at 64-63.
Head coach
Jeff Voris called for a two-point conversion attempt in the last snap of the game, and offensive coordinator Kyle Conner dialed up an interesting play as Young flipped the ball to a wide receiver on an end-around, who then found tight end
Mark Geers on the goal line. Geers pushed across the line for a successful attempt and 65-64 win.
"This was a great end to the spring," said Voris, who will enter his 12
th season as the head coach at Butler. "These guys have put in a lot of work over the last month, and it's fun to be able to come out and compete to close this portion of the season."
The game was halted for 30 minutes midway through the second quarter due to lightning. Prior to the delay, Butler's defense jumped out to an early lead. After four drives, the Defense led, 14-1. The unit's 16-1 lead was the largest of the game. The Offense never led prior to the winning two-point conversion.
Receivers
Pace Temple,
Ryan Smith,
Billy Robinson, Gallagher, and Turley each hauled in passes of at least 25 yards in the contest.
Caleb Cross and
Anthony Scaccia each had a rushing touchdown for the Offense.
Three defenders had interceptions as
Carter Raleigh,
Isaak Newhouse, and
Zach Bacon each picked off a throw. Bacon returned his for a touchdown.
Jared Harris,
Mason Brunner,
Danny Banks (two), and Burdo had sacks.
The Bulldogs have concluded Spring workouts. The team will rally for camp in early August in preparation for the 2017 season that opens Sept. 2 at Illinois State.
