Eighteen holes into the 2017 BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship, the Bulldogs are positioned in third place. Butler opened the 54-hole event with a team score of 309 (+21) Friday at Callawassie Island, S.C.
Georgetown leads the six-team event, posting an eight-over total of 296. The Hoyas have a seven-shot lead over second-place St. John's. Butler is in third, six shots clear of Seton Hall (315, +27), while Xavier (316, +28) and Creighton (318, +30) round out the field.
Freshman
Betsy Werner was the top-performing Bulldog in Friday's action, navigating the 5,952 yards to the tune of a three-over 75. She is one of four players tied for fifth place individually.
Abigail Gleixner and
Lauren Tibbets, who each received All-BIG EAST second team honors earlier this week, shot 76 and 77, respectively. Gleixner is alone in ninth, while Tibbets is in a tie for tenth.
Kelsey McDougall (81) and
Rachel Gathof (83) rounded out the five Bulldogs.
Seton Hall's Cassie Pantelas has the individual lead at one-under (71), one stroke better than Georgetown's Alexa Popowitz.
Play continues Saturday and Sunday in South Carolina with scheduled 8 a.m. tee times both days.
