INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's soccer program is pleased to announce the addition of defender Annika Schmidt. A native of Zionsville, Ind., Schmidt will transfer to Butler this year after spending the first two years of her collegiate career playing for the nationally-ranked UConn Huskies.
"We have been huge fans of Annika for many years, going back to her time as a standout player at Zionsville High School and during her highly successful club career," Co-Head Coach
Rob Alman stated. "She is one of the best talents to emerge from our local area in recent years and we are very excited to welcome Annika and her family in to our program."
Schmidt played in 15 games for UConn during the 2016 season, making one start. She scored one goal and logged over 500 minutes of playing time. UConn ended the year with a 19-3-1 overall record which earned them a trip to the NCAA Tournament. They defeated Albany 4-2 in the opening round, but would fall to Auburn 4-1 in the second round. The Huskies would be recognized as the 20th best team in the NCAA after the final NSCAA Coaches Poll which was released Dec. 6.
"Annika's skill set and mentality will add a tremendous amount to our squad," Alman added. "I think her level of experience will position her to make an immediate impact this fall."
Schmidt will have the opportunity to play at Butler for three seasons after taking a medical redshirt at UConn in 2015. Before attending UConn, Schmidt was a four-year letter winner at Zionsville H.S. The 5-9 defender earned All-American honors as a senior and was also named MVP of the Girls High School All-American Game.
A two-time All-State selection, Schmidt was a member of the TopDrawerSoccer National Top 150. In the classroom Schmidt was a two-time Academic All-State selection.
