Lauren Tibbets captured the individual title at the 2017 BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship, firing a two-under 70 in Sunday's final round to win the 54-hole event by four strokes. She led Butler to a second-place finish.
Tibbets was the only player in red figures for the second day in a row. Her round of 70 included four birdies on the 5,925-yard Callawassie Island, S.C. course. The sophomore carded a 71 in the second round after a 77 in the first round for a three-round total of 218 (+2).
She entered the final 18 holes in a tie for third, three shots behind 36-hole leader Cassie Pantelas of Seton Hall. Pantelas shot 41 on the front nine Sunday to drop out of contention.
For much of the day, Tibbets was tracking Georgetown's Alexa Popowitz. The Hoya was two-under on her round through 13 holes and had a two-shot lead on Tibbets entering the 349-yard, par-4 14
th. On the most pivotal hole of the championship, Tibbets birdied while Popowitz carded a 7. Tibbets birdied the 15
th as well and parred in for the four-shot win over Pantelas and Georgetown's Lauren Gros.
Butler entered Sunday's play in second place, but only three shots in front of St. John's. The Bulldogs responded with a 10-over team score of 298, which was just one off the Sunday score of leader Georgetown. Butler's performance turned that three-shot lead for second into a 19-shot margin over SJU for second.
Abigail Gleixner shot a three-over 75 Sunday to finish at 224 (+8) for the championship. That was good for a tie for fifth. Junior
Kelsey McDougall climbed four spots on the leaderboard (to 14
th) with a two-over 74 Sunday. It was her best round of the event and left her at 232 (+16) after the 54 holes.
Rachel Gathof fired a 79 Sunday for a three-round total of 239 (+23, T-20
th). Freshman
Betsy Werner finished at 234 (+18, 16
th overall) with an 81 on Sunday.
Georgetown won the team title, leading after each round. The Hoyas earn the BIG EAST's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Tournament. St. John's finished third (924, +60), while Xavier (933, +69), Seton Hall (936, +72) and Creighton (966, +102) rounded out the field.
