Erik Peterson destroyed Butler's school record in the 10,000 meters, running a time of 28:11.02 late Friday night at the Stanford Invitational in California. The performance earned Peterson BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors. The conference announced the recognition Wednesday, April 5.
The Bulldogs have claimed both men's track weekly honors from the BIG EAST so far this season as Peterson's recognition joins
Euan Makepeace, who received the first outdoor weekly award on March 29.
Peterson's time was 26 seconds better than the previous mark by Julius Mwangi (28:37.10) in 1998. Peterson's mark is sixth-best in the world this season and the second-best mark in NCAA. The time qualifies him for this summer's U.S. Outdoor Championships. It is the fastest time in Indiana collegiate history.
Peterson's mark also qualifies him for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
