SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior left-handed pitcher
Jeff Schank tossed eight full innings of baseball in the BIG EAST opener to help the Bulldogs defeat the Seton Hall Pirates 6-2. Schank struck out nine and limited the Pirates to just one earned run off four hits. With the win, Schank improved to 4-1 on the year. The Bulldogs as a team reached the 20-win plateau and now sit at 20-8 overall with a 1-0 mark in the conference.
Schank's lone run hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning with Seton Hall getting and RBI single from Fortin to take the 1-0 lead.
The game would be tied up in the fourth after a sac fly from
Jordan Lucio and the Bulldogs would take a 2-1 edge in the fifth after an RBI single from
Connor Dall.
The top of the sixth inning put BU in the driver's seat as the Bulldogs posted three more runs off four hits.
Michael Hartnagel and Lucio provided the team with back-to-back singles with one out. The best swing of the day would follow with
Gehrig Parker connecting on a two-RBI triple to right centerfield.
The extra base hit would signal the end of the day for Prendergast as Leon came in from the bullpen. Leon got a strikeout against the first BU batter, but
Michael DiViesti would extend the inning with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to make the score 5-1 Bulldogs.
Each side posted a run in the ninth to bring the game to its final score.
Tyler Houston came up with an RBI double to left center that scored DiViesti. The Pirates sent one home on a RBI single to center.
These two teams will square off again tomorrow at Own T. Carroll Field. First pitch is slated for 1 PM.
