Pratt Wins 10K to Highlight @Butler_CCTF's First Day at BIG EAST Championships

VILLANOVA, Pa. – After the first day of the 2017 BIG EAST Track & Field Championships Presented by Jeep at the Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova Stadium, Butler's men are in fourth place, while the women are tied for sixth.
 
The Marquette men and women are in the lead with 60 points on the women's side and 71 points on the men's side.
 
Final events for Friday included the men's and women's steeplechase and 10K, pole vault, long jump, hammer throw, javelin, and men's high jump.
 
Butler senior Olivia Pratt became a two-time 10K winner as she beat her 2016 champion time by six seconds, crossing the finish line at 34:14.18. Maddie Westerhoff posted a personal-best that was an NCAA Regional qualifying time. She placed fourth in the event.
 
Pratt gives the Bulldogs three straight 10K wins, joining Mara Olson's 2015 title. Pratt has also won back-to-back indoor 5K BIG EAST crowns.
 
Providence senior Stephen Robertson won the 10K on the men's side with a time of 30:08.04. Butler's Matt Lumbar came in second at 30:11.68 and Friar Tom O'Neill finished third at 30:12.57. Lumbar outkicked O'Neill down the stretch.
 
In the decathlon, five events were completed on Friday (100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-meter dash). Marquette freshman Sam Sagan leads the field of six with 3,331 points. He won all but the high jump event. Butler freshman Wade Walder, the 2017 Indoor BIG EAST Heptathlon champion, is in second with 3,233 points.
 
Villanova sophomore Thomas Conboy won the men's pole vault event with a height of 4.71 meters. Butler's Walder was runner up and Marquette sophomore James Kubik was third at 4.51 meters.
 
Rookie Daniel Armstrong from Marquette won the men's high jump with a height of 2.15 meters. Xavier senior Russell Platt was the runner up with a height of 2.00 meters. Butler's Dakota Thompson was third with 1.90 meters. 
 
The Saturday schedule includes the 1,500-meter finals as both Euan Makepeace and Josephine Thestrup easily advanced out of Friday's preliminaries.
 
Championship action on the track begins at 10 a.m. with the men's decathlon on 110-meter hurdles. The full event schedule and meet program can be found on the BIG EAST Track & Field Championship Central. The BIG EAST Digital Network broadcast beings at 12:55 p.m. ET.
 
The pole vault competition will be indoors on Saturday due to forecasted weather in the area.
