Butler senior
Erik Peterson won the 10,000 meters at the NCAA East Regional, setting himself up for a run at an NCAA title in a few weeks in Eugene, Ore.
Peterson's time of 29:55.06 was well off his season-best, but the goal was to secure one of the 12 qualifying spots from the East Regional for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships that begin June 8. The top 12 in the event finished within 10 seconds of each other.
The East Regional was held in Lexington, Ky., and Peterson was one of three Bulldogs in action Thursday evening.
In the women's 10,000 meters, senior
Olivia Pratt ran into some bad luck as she lost a shoe during the event. She battled through the setback to finish the event in a time of 35:09.57, good for 27
th place. She and teammate Maddie Westerhoff (35:43.65, 39
th) were outside the required top 12 spots to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Pratt, an All-American and BIG EAST champion, finishes her career as one of the most decorated student-athletes in Butler program history.
Butler's fourth NCAA Regional qualifier –
Euan Makepeace – will compete Saturday evening in the men's 5,000 meters.
