The Butler duo of
Mikheil Khmiadashvili and
Mason Dragos has been selected to participate in the doubles competition as part of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships later this month. This is believed to be the first Butler singles or doubles selection to the championships.
The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee selected 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams to compete in the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships May 24-29 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia. The tournament will begin after the conclusion of the team championships which run from May 18-23.
Khmiadashvili and Dragos are currently ranked No. 60 nationally in the most recent ITA rankings. The duo is 12-3 on the season, including 8-2 at the No. 1 position this spring.
All matches will be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
The tournament draw will be announced at a later date.
As a team, Butler will open the 2017 NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 12 at No. 3 overall seed Ohio State. The Bulldogs earned an automatic team bid by winning the 2017 BIG EAST Tournament. The team berth is the program's first since 2007.
Â
Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have started a minimum of 10 doubles matches, eight must be completed, with four of the eight matches completed in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
