Jared Timmer's header in the 95
th minute gave Butler a 1-0 overtime win over visiting UIC Friday night in the 2017 opener for both teams. The match was played in the newly-renamed Sellick Bowl on the Butler campus in Indianapolis.
Timmer, one of the three captains for the No. 25-ranked Bulldogs, was a preseason All-BIG EAST selection after earning first-team postseason honors in 2016. Friday's match featured two conference champions and NCAA Tournament participants as Butler won the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament title while UIC did the same in the Horizon League.
Timmer's game-winner came off a free kick from sophomore
Lewis Suddick, who curved the ball toward Timmer from 20 yards out.
Butler had a few early chances, but the best chance in regulation came with 90 seconds remaining in the second half as once again Suddick was the one who served up a beautiful ball that
Brandon Guhl headed on net. UIC keeper Sawyer Jackman made a diving stop on the play to essentially send the match to extra time.
The Bulldogs held a slight 16-14 advantage in shots, led by seven from senior captain
Eric Leonard. Timmer and Suddick each added three shots.
Eric Dick posted a shutout in goal for the Bulldogs, making three saves on the evening. Butler had 10 corner kicks compared to five for the visitors. Â
The Bulldogs travel to Louisville Monday night. The Cardinals are ranked in the Top 10 nationally. Last season, the teams played to a 0-0 draw.
