Kelan Martin led five Bulldogs in double figures with 29 points as Butler opened its foreign trip in Spain with an 84-80 win over a team of professional players from Madrid. The contest was the first of four that the Bulldogs will play in Spain over the next week.
Martin went 11-of-20 from the field, including five three-pointers, and added nine rebounds.
The Bulldogs trailed, 59-52, heading into the fourth quarter. After the Madrid All-Stars scored the first basket of the period, Butler went on a 16-2 run to take a 68-63 advantage. The lead grew to eight with two minutes to play. The group that began the fourth quarter and spearheaded the run included freshmen
Aaron Thompson and
Christian David.
Butler made 12 of its first 14 attempts from the field in the fourth quarter to surge to the lead. The team scored 32 points in the deciding period, sparked by 11 by Martin and eight from
Kamar Baldwin.
Baldwin and
Tyler Wideman each had 13 points in the contest. Baldwin's statsheet included seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Wideman added seven rebounds.
Sean McDermott had 12 points on four first-half three-pointers. Junior
Nate Fowler was the fifth Bulldog double figures with 10 points and eight boards.
Madrid's largest lead was 26-17 after hitting a three-pointer at the first quarter horn. Butler scored the first 17 points of the second quarter to take its first lead of the game. Butler took a 44-42 lead into the half.
The Bulldogs had 17 turnovers in the contest, with 12 coming in the first half. Part of that was the team getting acclimated to the international rule where the ball must bounce prior to a foot moving.
The game was played in the Pabellon Javi Limones, which was an approximate 30-minute drive from the team's hotel in the city center of Madrid. The gymnasium did not have air conditioning and the temperature pushed near 100 degrees for the 8 p.m. local start.Â
Butler next plays Sunday in Albacete.
