The fieldhouse served as the site of the volleyball competition during the 1987 Pan-Am Games. The largest crowd ever to see a volleyball match in the U.S. (14,500) watched United States defeat Cuba in the men's gold medal competition. On April 28, 1965, the United States All-Stars – featuring college stars Tom and Dick Van Arsdale, Jon McGlocklin, Flynn Robinson, and Rick Barry, coached by Tony Hinkle – played the Soviet Union National Team basketball game at the Butler Fieldhouse. The college stars won 78-73 in overtime, before a crowd of 13,790.
