A pair of newcomers led the Bulldogs in the first round of the Badger Invitational Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Michael Cascino navigated the par-72, 7,259-yard course to the tune of a one-under 71. He had three birdies and two bogeys in his round.

Sophomore Logan Sabins, also in his first season with the Bulldogs, matched Cascino's total of 71 behind two birdies and a single bogey. They are tied for tenth. Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips leads the event with an opening-round 66 (-6).

Butler finished the opening afternoon with a five-over team total of 293. That is good for a tie for ninth among the 16 teams. Texas A&M leads the event at 276 (-12). Nevada and the host Badgers are tied for second at 285 (-3)

Ricky Kuiper shot a 73 (+1), which featured an eagle and two birdies. Michael Denner (78, +6) and Patrick Allgeier (79, +7) rounded out the Butler five.

The 54-hole event is hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis.

Play continues Monday with all 16 teams teeing off at 9 a.m. (Central). The final round Tuesday includes a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
