The Bulldogs continue a homestand at the Sellick Bowl Tuesday night, hosting the Evansville Purple Aces. The match will be streamed through Facebook Live on the Butler Bulldogs page.
Â
The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
Â
Butler comes into the match with a 3-2 record. Butler ended the week ranked No. 21 in the United Soccer Coaches poll with a new poll forthcoming Tuesday. Evansville has a record of 4-1, most recently dropping a 1-0 decision at Grand Canyon.
Â
In Butler's most recent match (Friday at home against Western Michigan), the Bulldogs took a quick lead when
Isaac Galliford scored his first goal of the season in the 13
th minute. The Broncos responded by scoring three quick goals in the 17
th, 18
th, and 24
th minutes, respectively, giving them a 3-1 lead. Butler's
Brandon Guhl scored a goal in the 87
th minute, but a series of corner kicks in the final minute could not lead to the tying goal. Guhl and freshman
Joel Harvey assisted on Galliford's goal; it was Harvey's first point as a Bulldog.
Â
In his first start in a Butler uniform, goalie
Ryan Clark made seven saves. He started in place of an ill
Eric Dick. Redshirt freshman
Nathan Edmunds made his first Butler start in the match, while
Usman Gil Ivern and
Maurice Thompson III played the first minutes of their Butler career.
Â
In the match against Western Michigan, Guhl took the team lead in points with his fourth goal and first assist of the season. He now has nine points on the season. His four goals and 0.8 goals per game average are 23rd nationally.
Â
The Bulldogs have kept fans on the edge of their seat through the early part of the season as all five results have been of the one-goal variety, including two overtime contests.
Â
This was evident in the Sept. 3 match with San Francisco as the Bulldogs built a 2-0 lead before the Dons had tallied in the 81st and 83
rd minutes to tie the match. The Bulldogs' score in the 84th minute proved to be the winner.
Â
Lewis Suddick, Guhl, andÂ
Eric Leonard were named to the All-Tournament Team at the weekend event hosted by Indiana University.
Suddick also earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 4 after picking up two goals and two assists in the adidas/IU Credit Forum Classic. He scored two goals in the Sept. 1 win over South Florida, including the game-winner, and he assisted on the game-winning goal against San Francisco asÂ
Kieran Gelendhuys put home a header off Suddick's corner kick.
Suddick was the second Bulldog to win the weekly honor in the first two weeks of the season as juniorÂ
Jared Timmer was recognized as the Player of the Week after the first games of the 2017 season. Dick was named Goalkeeper of the Week alongside Timmer's honor.
Â
Suddick, an All-BIG EAST preseason team honoree, has seven points on the season (two goals, three assists). He missed the Western Michigan match along with Dick and
Derek Sutton. Those were in addition to Timmer and
Marco Charalambous, who were lost for the season in the Louisville match Aug. 28 and while playing over the summer, respectively.
Guhl took three shots in two matches at the Adidas/IU Credit Forum Classic…and all of them found the net. The SMU transfer registered the first three goals of his Butler and collegiate career. The two goals against San Francisco on Sunday night gave the Bulldogs their 2-0 lead.
Â
Coach
Paul Snape returns a talented roster in his seventh season in charge of the Butler program. The Bulldogs are coming off their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010 after spending much of the 2016 season ranked in the Top 25 nationally. The season culminated in winning the BIG EAST Tournament and receiving the No. 15 national seed in the NCAA Tournament. Butler finished the campaign with a record of 13-5-2.
Entering the contest with Evansville, Snape has a record of 55-42-20. The Butler coaching staff, led by Snape, was named the NSCAA (now referred to as United Soccer Coaches) Great Lakes Region Staff of the Year for Division I institutions in 2016. This honor is a result of a vote by other coaches in the region.
Â
Tuesday night's match is the final outing before BIG EAST play begins over the weekend. Creighton, which Butler defeated in the BIG EAST Tournament championship match in 2016, comes to Indianapolis for a 1 p.m. match Saturday. The match will be played at Varsity Field and will be aired on the BIG EAST Digital Network as part of the Fox Sports Go app.
