COLLEGE STATION, Texas –
Paige Monaghan and
Halle Stelbasky each found the back of the net on Friday night to help Butler pull off a major upset against No. 10 Texas A&M. BU posted their fifth-straight shutout victory of the season against the nationally-ranked Aggies in College Station to improve to 5-1-1 on the year. The 2-0 victory is Butler's first win over a ranked opponent since the 2013 campaign.
Butler took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute after a goal from Monaghan. Her first goal of the season came off a beautiful back heal assist from
Halle Stelbasky.
Butler kept the momentum rolling on the road and added another goal just nine minutes later with Stelbasky netting her first goal of the season. The junior forward took a pass from
Caitlyn DiSarcina, made a spin move in the middle of the field and delivered a bouncing ball that beat the Texas A&M keeper to the right side.
Butler had only scored one goal during the first half of action this season before Friday night's tilt at Texas A&M. The two quick strikes allowed the defense to settle in and post yet another shutout.
The winning goalkeeper in the upset victory was
Hannah Luedtke (2-1). The redshirt sophomore made five stops to move into sole possession of eighth place at Butler in all-time career saves (98). Luedtke logged all 90 minutes of action tonight as fellow BU goalkeeper
Leonie Doege (3-0-1) traveled back to Germany to play in the U19 European Championship qualification games. BU was also without starting all-conference center back
Shannon McDevitt who traveled home to Michigan for a family emergency.
Butler will host two more games at the Sellick Bowl before the start of BIG EAST Conference action. Their next match falls on Sunday, Sept. 17 when the Indiana State Sycamores visit Indianapolis. The final non-conference match is a Thursday evening tilt vs. Chicago State on Sept. 21.
