@ButlerMBB's Kelan Martin Earns BIG EAST and National Weekly Honors

For the second time this season and sixth time in his career, Kelan Martin has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week. The conference office announced the recognition Tuesday morning (Jan. 2).

Martin averaged 25.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game last week, leading Butler to a win over No. 1 Villanova and a road triumph over Georgetown. Martin shot 53 percent from the field in doing so.

For his efforts, Martin was also named the Lute Olson Award National Player of the Week. The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons with his respective team. Martin also earned the honor once as a junior.

Against Georgetown Wednesday, Martin had 27 points, including the game-winner with 2.6 seconds remaining in double-overtime. In Saturday's win over the Wildcats, Martin had 24 points and eight rebounds. He made all four of his three-point attempts and sealed the game with nine points over the final 5:05.

Martin now has nine 20-point games on the season and leads the Bulldogs with averages of 18.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

This is Martin's sixth career BIG EAST weekly honor after earning the recognition twice as a junior and twice as a sophomore.

Butler's 2-0 week also saw the Bulldogs recognized as the "Team of the Week" by NCAA.com and NBCSports.com.

Martin and the Bulldogs travel to No. 5 Xavier Tuesday night for a match-up of 2-0 BIG EAST teams. The game begins at 7 p.m. and will be televised nationally on FS1.
