The Bulldogs posted a number of strong individual performances at the prestigious Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame Friday and Saturday in South Bend, Ind. The event is in its 31
st year and the 2018 edition featured 889 athletes.
In the top section of the 3,000 meters, it was a pair of Bulldogs – young and old – who stood out. Freshman
Barry Keane finished fourth with a time of 8:04.50. The time was good for seventh on Butler's all-time list and is currently the third among true freshmen in the NCAA this season. Keane came in one spot behind Butler alum Tom Anderson, who finished in a time of 8:03.44. Both Bulldogs posted lifetime bests in the event.
Daniel Garcia ran an electrifying time of 4:03.82 in the Meyo Mile. Garcia finished fourth in the event and his time ranks eighth in Butler history.
A number of Bulldogs posted lifetime bests in their respective events. Those marks included
Jake Kellersohn (7.11) in the 60 meters,
Graham Stecz in the 400 meters (50.05),
Kyle Harris in the 800 meters (1:54.93) and both
Evan Johnson (4:09.46) and
Michael Carey (4:18.94) in the mile. Johnson won his section, Carey was second, and Harris was third in his.
On Friday, Stecz (1:21.04) and
Chandler McGaha (1:22.22) posted the third- and fifth-fastest times, respectively, in Butler history in the 600 meters. Also on Friday,
Bobby Johnson was 13
th overall in the 5k, crossing the line in 14:37.23.
Matt Lumbar finished second in his 5k section, running a time of 14:43.37.
On the women's side, sophomore
Josephine Thestrup finished fifth in the Meyo Mile. Her time of 4:48.65 is the best indoor performance for her in the event.
Freshman
Kelly Mindak highlighted the Friday action in South Bend, with a school-record time of 1:34.56 in the 600 meters. That was also good enough to win her section.
Angelina Ellis finished fourth in her section of the mile Saturday, running a lifetime-best 4:58.04.
Freshman Niki Enzeh had a lifetime-best throw of 13.0m in the shot put. She moves into the top five of the BIG EAST list for the 2018 indoor season.
The Bulldogs are back in action next weekend. A majority of the roster will travel to Bloomington for the Indiana University-hosted Hoosier Hills meet. Select Bulldogs will travel to the University of Washington for the Husky Classic.
