Johnny Leverenz moved to the top spot nationally in the 1,500 meters, clocking a time of 3:43.61 on Friday in the opening day of Vanderbilt's Black and Gold Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
The meet continues Saturday.
Leverenz's time betters the mark of 3:43.96 set by Georgia's Bryan Kamau. That was the fastest 1,500 meters in the NCAA entering the weekend. Leverenz was more than two seconds faster than Jack Anstey of Illinois State, who was second in the event.
Bobby Johnson and
Clark Otte finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Otte's time of 3:54.75 won his section and was just behind Johnson's time of 3:53.32. It was Otte's outdoor debut for the Bulldogs.
Wade Walder was fourth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 14-feet, 1.25 inches.
On the women's side,
Josephine Thestrup finished fourth in the 1,500 meters, crossing the line in 4:32.19. Agnes Abu, running unattached, won the event in 4:26.31.
Angelina Ellis and
Camille Hines were also in the third section, running 4:36.85 and 4:38.02, respectively.
Niki Ezeh was sixth in the shot put with a throw of 12.55 meters.         Â
Freshman
Carson Fields ran a personal-best 25.55 in the 200 meters. That was good for third in her section.
The meet in Nashville brings together student-athletes from more than 20 teams. The Vanderbilt campus was able to dodge rain in the area Friday night; the forecast for Saturday looks to include some rainfall.
