Butler sophomore
Patrick Allgeier made a strong jump up the leaderboard Monday at the 2018 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship. Allgeier's four-under 68 moved him into the thick of the individual chase, just one shot off the lead with only Tuesday's 18 holes remaining in the tournament.
Allgeier's round Monday was three shots better than anyone else in the field. He got out of the gates quickly with a birdie on No. 2 followed by an eagle on the 548-yard par-5 third. Allgeier played the back nine in one-under 35 with a birdie and eight pars. For the round, he had an eagle, four birdies, and two bogeys.
The Championship is being played at Callawassie Island, S.C., and includes the final round Tuesday at the par-72, 6,993-yard course.
That final round will have Allgeier just one shot off the lead of Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn (142, -2). After two rounds, Allgeier is at 143 (-1), while Eichhorn followed his Sunday 69 with a one-over 73 on Monday. Georgetown's Jack Musgrave is third at even-par 144.
The Bulldogs shot an even 300 on Monday, which was a 12-stroke improvement from Sunday's opening round. Butler jumped to fifth in the team standings after entering Monday's round in sixth. Butler's 300 was the third-best team round of the day, and better than Georgetown and Marquette who still occupy the top two team positions after 36 holes. Georgetown (593, +17) has a three-stroke lead over Marquette (596, +20). DePaul is in third after shooting a Monday-best, five-over 293 for a two-day total of 602 (+26). Seton Hall is fourth at 608 (+32).
Butler (612, +36) is followed by Villanova, St. John's, Xavier, and Creighton in the nine-team field. The Bulldogs enter the final round with a six-shot lead over Villanova.
Michael Cascino is tied for 17
th in the field at 10-over. He shot a nine-over 81 Monday after a 73 on Sunday. His Monday round included nine pars and nine bogeys.
Logan Sabins is tied for 23
rd at 156. He shot a five-over 77 Monday. Sabins was one-over through 15 holes but had a tough final three holes on the afternoon.
Michael Denner had three birdies on his card Monday and posted a two-over 74. He jumped 14 spots on the leaderboard after an 85 Sunday. His two-round score is 159, and he is tied for 27
th.
Ricky Kuiper shot 85 Monday and is at 179 for the tournament.
The final round of the BIG EAST Championship begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. ET. The BIG EAST team winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Should the individual champion not be a member of the championship team, he will also earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field as an individual.
