The Butler softball team lost a pair to Creighton Saturday, falling 8-3 in game one and 5-3 in game two. Butler is now 11-19, 2-3 in the BIG EAST. Creighton moves to 16-11, 4-1 BIG EAST.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in game one of the doubleheader, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Bluejays.
Kaitlin Doud got the Bulldog offense rolling in the bottom of the first, knocking a triple to score
Alyssa Lach who had reached base with a walk.
Cheyenne Thompson homered over the left field fence in the bottom of the third to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth.
Creighton would strike in the top of the fifth after a walk and an error put two Bluejays on base. Sam Crowley doubled to left field, tying the game at two runs each. Hope Moreno hit another double for Creighton, scoring Crowley, and giving the Bluejays a 3-2 lead.
The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the inning, with a single from Lach to score
Jenna Foreman who reached base with a walk. Foreman stole second before Lach brought her home to tie the game.
Creighton would hold the Bulldogs scoreless the last three innings and score four runs in the top of the sixth, and one in the top of the seventh, to take the game 8-3. A three-run Mileah Mckelvy homerun lifted the Blujays in the sixth while an Ashley Cantu single scored the Bluejays' final run.
Bryanna Clark (4-4) got the win for Creighton. Doud (5-4) received the loss after coming on in relief for starter
Alyssa Graves during the fourth inning.
In game two, Creighton jumped out first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Sam Crowley reached base on a walk followed by a Hope Moreno single to put runners on first and second. After Mckelvy was hit by a pitch, Mikaela Pechar doubled to right field to score Moreno and Crowley.
Pechar homered in the top of the third, scoring Mckelvy who singled the play before, giving the Bluejays a 3-0 lead. Doud came on in relief of starting pitcher
Gabbi Schnaiter following the homerun. Creighton struck again in the fourth, with a solo homerun from Crowley, which would seal the game for Creighton.
Butler answered in the bottom of the fourth with three runs of their own. Lach singled through the left side to begin the inning followed by two lineouts from Doud and
Madi Christiansen. With two outs,
Sarah Dixon walked, followed by a base clearing double from
Elyse Babb.
After a Thompson walk, starting pitcher Logan Black was replaced with Clark.
Claire Gilliland singled up the middle the next at bat, scoring pinch runner
Ashley Post to bring the Bulldogs within two.
Creighton would hold the Bulldogs scoreless the final three innings.
Clark (5-4) received her second win in the circle against the Bulldogs. Kiele Miller, who came on in relief in the sixth, received the save. Schnaiter (1-6) received the loss for Butler.
The series finale against Creighton will take place on Sunday at the Butler softball field. First pitch is set for noon.
