The Butler track team will travel to Geneva, Ohio, for the 2018 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships presented by Jeep Friday and Saturday. The Championships will be held at the Spire Institute, which also hosted the 2016 Championships. The Marquette women and DePaul men enter as the defending 2017 champions.
Junior
Allie Vogeler and sophomore
Wade Walder look to defend their 2017 titles in the 400-meter hurdles and decathlon, respectively.
Vogeler currently holds the school record in the 400-meter hurdles, which she set at the Raleigh Relays in 2018 with a time of 59.47. That clip is also good for the top spot in the BIG EAST.
At last year's championships, Walder clinched the decathlon with 6,265 points, which also set the Butler school record. Walder currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.94. The sophomore placed third in 110-meter hurdles at the 2017 championships.
Johnny Leverenz looks to continue a standout junior campaign. His 1,500 time (3:42.77) tops the BIG EAST and is currently 29th in the NCAA.
Daniel Garcia, another Bulldog distance runner, ran a time of 3:46.17 in the 1,500 meters at the Billy Hayes Invitational last weekend. Garcia was also a second place finisher in the mile at the 2018 BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
Freshman
Carson Fields, the current Butler record holder in the 100 meters (12.14) and 200 meters (24.72), will run those two events in her first BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
At the BIG EAST Indoor Championships,
Josephine Thestrup was fourth in the mile in a time of 4:44.91 and fifth in the 3,000 meters, crossing the line in 9:32.08. In the 1,500 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational this spring, she ran a time of 4:24.21, which is her best in a Butler uniform. She looks to continue a solid sophomore campaign, running the 1,500 and 5,000 meters at the outdoor championships.
Action begins at 10 a.m. ET on Friday with the first events of the decathlon and heptathlon. Field events start at 11 a.m. and running races begin at 1 p.m. and will continue through 5 p.m. Sixteen of Friday's running races will be preliminaries, while the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and 10,000-meter run will be championship races.
