The two teams last met Nov. 3, 2012 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. That was also an exhibition contest, and Butler came away with a 63-47 victory. In regular season meetings, Butler holds a 27-12 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to an initial meeting in 1929. A majority of the games were played between 1972-73 and 1977-78 when the teams played twice a year as Indiana Collegiate Conference foes. The Bulldogs return four of their top six scorers from a season ago, highlighted by Baldwin.
Baldwin is one of 20 members on the watch list for the 2020 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award. The conference's head coaches also selected Baldwin to the 2019-20 Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team.
Baldwin earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors in 2018-19. The native of Winder, Ga., placed seventh in the BIG EAST in scoring with a 17.0 average and was third in free throw shooting, making 85.0 percent. Having scored 1,453 points in three seasons with the Bulldogs, he has the fourth-best three-year scoring total in school history.
Eighteen of Butler's 31 regular season games are against teams ranked or receiving votes in the preseason AP Top 25 poll. Of the remaining 13 games, five (potentially six) are against teams that made 2019 NCAA Tournament.
Over the summer, a $10.5 million second phase of renovations to Hinkle Fieldhouse took place. Air-conditioning was added to the main arena and concourses. The program's practice facility, the Efroymson Family Gym, had a complete makeover, including the installation of the new Matt White Court, named in honor of the standout member of Butler's track and cross country teams during his years at Butler. White passed away in February, 2019 after a 19-year battle with ALS.
LaVall Jordan enters his third season leading the Butler program. He has amassed 37 wins and two postseason appearances in his first two seasons as the head coach of his alma mater.
The Bulldogs return eight letterwinners from 2018-19. That group is joined by an impressive group of newcomers.Â
Bryce Nze is now eligible for competition after sitting out last season after transferring from Milwaukee, where he played for Jordan during his freshman campaign.Â
Derrik Smits arrives as a graduate transfer from Valparaiso, where the 7-1 post player led the Crusaders in both scoring and rebounding last season.Â
