Four Bulldogs capped their summer by helping the Flint City Bucks to the USL League 2 National Championship. The Bucks claimed the trophy Saturday night (August 3) with a 1-0 win over Reading United AC.
One of Butler's incoming freshmen played a key role in the lone goal of the match. In the 110th minute, future Bulldog
Hemi Nasser slid an excellent through ball to Ayuk Tambe and he was played in alone on goal by speeding past two defenders with only the keeper to beat for the game-winner. As he approached the penalty area, Reading defender Lamine Conte tackled Tambe from behind. For his efforts, Conte received a red card and the Bucks were awarded a penalty kick.
Tambe then converted the PK.
The win brought the Bucks overall season record to 19-3-3 in all competitions and finished with an incredible home record of 10-1-1 at Kettering University's historic Atwood Stadium.
In addition to Nasser, the Bucks' roster included Bulldogs
Rhys Myers,
Jared Timmer and
Griffin DeBolt.
The Bucks won their record fourth USL League Two North American Championship. The Bucks won in Laredo, Texas in 2006 and then both home games in Pontiac in 2014 and 2016.
Butler has a long history with the Bucks, including head coach
Paul Snape, assistants
Adam Bruh and
Jason Perry, and graduate assistant David Goldsmith being part of the roster during their playing days.
Many of the 2019 Bulldogs are returning to campus soon as preseason practice begins next week.
