Ten Butler student-athletes from winter sports were honored by the Horizon League for success in the classroom and in competition, being named academic all-league. Five men’s track athletes, three men’s basketball players and two women’s swimmers were named Academic All-Horizon League.
Butler’s total of 10 honorees was tied with Loyola for second in the league, one behind UIC. In all, 74 student-athletes were honored.
Matt Roe’s track squad featured five academic all-league athletes, Thomas Boardman (Education), Kris Gauson (Education), Matt Lawder (Physics), Stephen Lisgo (Education) and Rob Mullett (Education). That the most for a men’s winter sport in the conference. Four of the five are currently enrolled in graduate programs at Butler, and all five at greater than a 3.51 GPA.
Zach Hahn, Gordon Hayward and Matt Howard of BU’s national runner-up men’s basketball team were each named academic all-league. Hahn (Secondary Education) and Howard (Finance) each own a GPA of greater than 3.71. Hayward (Computer Engineering) and Howard were each named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans earlier this year.
Two student-athletes from Maurice Stewart’s women’s swimming team were honored, Megan Wesler (Health Sciences) and Momo Wilson (International Studies). Both Wesler and Wilson own a GPA higher than 3.60.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal academic all-league teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
