FISHERS, Ind. - A Butler swimming team featuring more depth than it has had in recent years had a successful start to the 2012-13 season. BU defeated Valparaiso in a meet that also had Wright State, Evansville and Saint Louis.
Sophomore Caitlin Weichelt led Butler with a second-place showing in the 200 free (1:59.38) and a 2:35.14 time in the 200 breast that garnered sixth place. Weichelt, last year's team leader in the 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free and 200 breast, also swam the anchor leg of the 400 free relay that placed fifth.
Butler's other individual leaders included sophomore Lauren Lambrecht (400 IM, 4:53.93) and freshmen Elizabeth Miller (1000 free, 11:21.42) and Serena Daley (100 free, 58.31). Sophomore Megan Boebinger, a transfer from Illinois State, led BU in the 200 fly with a fifth-place 2:18.03. Miller was also the Bulldogs' top performer in the 500 free, placing 7th of 18 swimmers (5:31.21).
BU was led in the 50 free by freshman Abby Gibbons (26.46) and sophomore Lauren Scotti was Butler's top swimmer in the 200 back (2:16.57).
In dual scoring, Butler defeated former conference opponent Valparaiso 123-78. Evansville won the team scoring in the meet.
Butler's next meet is Friday, Oct. 19 at IUPUI.
