Eastern Illinois Holds off Butler 154-108

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Butler women's swimming team competed at Eastern Illinois over the weekend in a dual meet. The Bulldogs won several individual races, but came up just short as the Panthers recorded a 154-108 victory.

"I thought our team raced well, and I was pleased with our team depth in several events," Head Coach Maurice Stewart said. "Everyone contributed in many ways, and I was impressed with our team spirit. We just needed to win a few more events to have a chance to win the meet."

Sarah Gibbons and Elizabeth Miller took the top two spots for Butler in the 1650 freestyle. Gibbons won the event with a time of 18:36.03 while Miller was close behind at 18:41.29 for a second place finish. Hailey Jensen was also active in the 1650 freestyle for the first time in her career, providing Butler with even more depth in the event. She placed fifth overall with a time of 20:19.19.

The duo of Gibbons and Miller also finished back-to-back in the 500 yard freestyle with Gibbons earning first place with a time of 5:25.21 and Miller taking second place in 5:31.80.

Genevieve Pena recorded the top time for Butler in the 200 yard freestyle. She won the event with a time of 2:01.21. Abby Cutler and Helen Heimark rounded out the field for the Bulldogs. Cutler finished fourth with a time of 2:02.99 and Heimark ended the race in fifth clocking in at 2:06.58.

Yet another Bulldog to earn a victory on Saturday was Amanda Wagner who earned a first place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:38.05. Wagner narrowly defeated Katie VanHootegem of EIU who finished in 2:38.09.

Audrey Gosnell posted quality times for Butler in many different races. The freshman placed second in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.30. Another second place finish for Gosnell came in the 100 yard butterfly as she clocked in at 1:00.85. Each time placed Gosnell in the Butler All-Time Top 10. Sophomore Maggie Wright was also in action for Butler in the 100 yard butterfly as she placed fourth with a time of 1:03.71.

Claire Butkus led the team in the 100 yard freestyle as she placed second with a time of 54.63. Helen Heimark also competed in the 100 free by placing fourth with a time of 56.69.

Emma Green and Cecilia Rose each had solid performances in the 200 yard backstroke for Butler. Green placed second with a time of 2:17.78 and Rose was close behind in third at 2:19.19.

Both Butler relay performances were strong as the Bulldogs placed second in the 200 yard freestyle with the team of Gosnell, Gibbons, Heimark and Butkus (1:41.95). The 200 yard medley relay team of Kaitie Ring, Amanda Wagner, Gosnell and Butkus also placed second as they clocked in at 1:52.45.
