Butler Swimming Takes Sixth at House of Champions Meet
INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler swimming team placed sixth overall at the annual House of Champions Swim Meet this weekend. The Bulldogs posted 727 points to finish ahead of Western Illinois and Centre College. They nearly knocked off Easter Illinois (763 points) who finished in fifth.
Butler started day one on a high note with three impressive performances in the 500 free. Liz Miller placed 18th overall with a career-best time of 5:15.56. Other Bulldogs to post a season-best time included Abby Cutler who finished at 5:26.74 and Hayden Engstrom at 5:45.94.
"I was very pleased with our competitive fight and great team spirit to kick off the HOC Invitational," Head Coach Maurice Steward said. "Everyone did great, had fun, and swam fast".
Butler posted numerous season-best times in the 200 IM. Emma Green led the way with a 12th place finish, touching the wall at 2:12.49. Genevieve Pena had the second-best time on the team at 2:14.84. She finished 22nd overall in the finals with a time of 2:15.64.
Rounding out the effort in the 200 IM for Butler was Hailey Jensen (2:17.20), Milly Sauber (2:21.52), Allie Dvorchak (2:22.40), Mary Cerajewski (2:29.34), Maggie Wright (2:22.85) and Adrianna Kuhl (2:28.46).
Freshamn Audrey Gosnell stole the show in the 50 Free for Butler on Friday as she set a new school record with a ninth place finish clocking in at 23.84. Seren Daley ended up 20th in the finals of the 50 Free with a time of 25:17 and Claire Butkus set a new career-high best with a 21st place finish hitting the wall at 25.22
The 400 Medley Relay also took place during day one with Kaitie Ring setting a BIG EAST A Qualifying time in the lead-off 100 back with a time of 1:00.91. Ring swam for the A relay team, but it was Emma Green who stepped up for Butler on the B Team Relay as she posted a season-best time of 1:00.98 in the lead-off 100 back.
Butler set another school record on Saturday at the IUPUI Natatorium with the team of Ring, Amanda Wagner, Gosnell and Butkus taking sixth in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:48.81. The group broke the old record set in the 2013 conference championships with the team of Lauren Scotti, Wagner, Lauren Lambrecht and Serena Daley.
Two BIG EAST B standard times were set in the 400 Individual Medley. Liz Miller placed 13th with a time of 4:54.90 and Hailey Jensen was right behind her in 15th with a time of 4:55.20 for 14th place.
Gosnell continued to swim well for Butler over the weekend as she moved to second in the Butler All-Time Top 10 list in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 58.53. Her career-best time landed her in third place overall at the meet.
Butkus placed 11th in the 200 Freestyle with a season-best time of 1:56.92 and Wagner posted a sixth place finish in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.67.
The 800 Freestyle Relay was another big even for Butler as the team of Emma Green, Abby Cutler, Genevieve Pena and Claire Butkus moved to fourth all-time with a time of 7:58.96. Their season-best time landed them in eighth place.
"We raced well in the morning of day two, but I thought we would be a little bit quicker in the afternoon," Assistant Coach Luis Ambrosio said. "That's why we are racing, to figure out where we are right now. I love the fact that we have quality competition even though we have been going through tough practice routines. Our girls are staying focused on their main goals and are racing head-to-head. We had good relays and our depth is showing. It was a solid second day."
Day three featured Emma Green breaking a 13-year old school record in the 200 Backstroke. She finished 10th in the B Final with a time of 2:09.11 to break the old record held by Eiller (2:09.93).
Butkus represented Butler in the 100 Freestyle with an eighth place finish. She swam in the A Final and posted a time of 53.91. Her time of 53.25 in the prelims was her season-best. Gosnell also posted a season-best time in the B Final with a time of 54.07 to place 15th.
Amanda Wagner and Mary Cerajewski posted the top two times for Butler in the 200 Yard Breaststroke. Wagner's season-best time of 2:30.80 placed her 10th overall and Cerajewski took 17th with a time of 2:37.10. Cerajewski achieved her first BIG EAST A Qualifying Standard time in the 100 Breaststroke with a split of 1:11.52 during the prelims of the 200.
Genevieve Pena finished sixth in the 200 Yard Butterfly with a time of 2:13.61. Her season-best time came in the prelims where she hit the wall at 2:12.93.
The 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Butkus, Daley, Ring and Gosnell finished eighth overall with a time of 3:39.56. The team posted the fifth fastest time in school history. The B Team of Hailey Jensen, Abby Gibbons, Amanda Wagner, and Emma Green finished ninth clocking in at 3:42.05. Jensen reached her first BIG EAST Automatic Standard Time by leading off the relay with a 56.32 split.
