INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's swimming team placed fourth overall at the 2014 Butler Invitational with 394 points. Illinois State was the top team on the women's side with 955.5 points and Xavier took second place honors with 584.5. Third place went to Youngstown State (578), and the final team to compete was Evansville who took fifth (44).
"For this being our first meet since our winter training trip to Fort Lauderdale, I thought the team raced well," Head Coach Maurice Stewart said. "Everyone is showing good stroke improvements."
Amanda Wagner was a top performer for Butler as she earned a third place finish in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Wagner posted a time of 1:09.64 to earn 16 points for the team. Other Bulldogs to score in the 100 Yard Breaststroke included Mary Cerajewski who finished 10th at 1:13.27 and Serena Daley who was right behind in 11th place with the time of 1:15.71.
Wagner and Cerajewski joined Geneieve Pena in the 200 Yard Breaststroke with Wagner leading the Bulldogs with an eight place finish (2:35.62) to earn 11 points. Cerajewski and Pena finished back-to-back in 11th and 12th place clocking in at 2:41.70 and 2:43.78 respectively.
Audrey Gosnell was another standout swimmer for BU as she placed fifth overall in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:01.27. Gosnell was also active in the 50 Yard Freestyle where she placed fourth with a time of 24.86. The Bulldogs scored well in the 50 Yard Free as Claire Butkus took sixth (25.29) and Emily Albertz placed seventh (25.31 / BIG EAST A Qualifying Time).
Butler was led by Sarah Gibbons in the 500 Yard Freestyle who clocked in with a season-best time of 5:24.28 to finish fifth. Joining her in the event was Milly Sauber and Abby Cutler. Sauber placed ninth (5:31.02) and Cutler finished 10th (5:31.34). Gibbons also represented Butler in the 1650 Yard Freestyle with an eighth place finish, finishing in 18:45.68.
Two ties occurred for Butler student-athletes as Allie Dvorchak split points with Heidi Turner of Xavier in the 200 Yard Butterfly as each swimmer finished at 2:18.24. Emma Green was the second Bulldog to tie in an event as she split points with Rachel Root of Illinois State in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:01.11. Both Dvorchak and Green tied for seventh place.
A trio of Bulldogs finished in a pack during the 100 Yard Backstroke as Kaitie Ring, Helen Heinmark and Abby Cutler all scored points finishing in spots 13-15. Ring touched the wall at 1:04.63, Heinmark came in at 1:05.62 and Cutler was 15th at 1:06.50.
Sunday was senior day for Ring and Hayden Engstrom who placed 13th overall for Butler in the 200 Yard Backstroke. Joining Engstrom in the race was Green who placed eighth (2:15.37) and Emily McCutchan (2:19.83).
"It was a special moment for me to celebrate the academic and athletic achievements of our two graduating seniors Kaitie Ring and Hayden Engstrom," Stewart added. "I am very proud of each of our captains [Ring and Engstrom]. Both swimmers have been tremendous leaders and for our team this year, they will be missed."
Green capped off her individual races with a sixth place effort in the 400 Yard IM (4:53.77). Teammate Pena was close behind in eighth (4:55.71).
Four Bulldogs scored points in the 100 Yard Freestyle with Claire Butkus leading the team with a seventh place finish (54.58). Dvorchak and Albertz came in at 12th (56.83) and 13th (56.88). Daley came in at 15th with a time of 58.48.
Each Butler relay team placed fifth at the fifth Annual Butler Invite. The 200 Yard Medley Relay team of Ring, Wagner, Gosnell and Daley finished at 1:54.12 to net 28 points. The 400 Yard Freestyle relay team of Albertz, Gibbons, Green and Butkus clocked in at 3:44.44.
The team will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 with a meet at Western Illinois. The BIG EAST Championship meet is also right around the corner as BU will travel to Sewell N.J. to compete on Feb. 19.
