Two School Records Fall at BIG EAST Swimming Championships

SEWELL, N.J. – Butler set two school records on Wednesday night on the opening day of the BIG EAST Swimming Championships. The team placed sixth overall in the 800 Free Relay and took fifth place in the 200 Medley Relay.

"We kicked off our first Big East Conference Championship in impressive fashion in both relay events tonight," Head Coach Maurice Stewart said. "The culmination of hard work, team spirit, and team commitment really showed this team is capable of great accomplishment. I am proud of our team effort, and hope we can carry tonight's momentum into tomorrow events."

The 800 Free Relay team was made up of Emma Green, Sarah Gibbons, Genevieve Pena and Claire Butkus. The impressive performance allowed the team to post a time of 7:47.39 which broke a 14-year old school record in the event.

Green got the race started with a lead-off lifetime-best time of 1:56.02. Gibbons was second as she also posted a lifetime best relay split with a time of 1:56.91. The team finished with Pena swimming in the third spot (1:58.2) and Butkus touching the wall at 1:56.1.

The 200 Medley Relay team featured Kaitie Ring, Amanda Wagner, Audrey Gosnell and Butkus. This unit placed fifth overall with a time of 1:45.83, setting a new school record that they previously recorded early this year at the House of Champions Invite, held in November.

The breakdown started with Ring who posted a lifetime-best 50 back lead-off time at 27.24. Wagner's split in the 50 breast was also a lifetime-best as she finished in 29.77.

Gosnell was the next Bulldog in the water as she posted a lifetime-best in the 50 fly with a time of 24.57. That split was the second fastest of any swimmer in the conference. Butkus was busy as she competed on each relay team. Her 50 Free split on the medley relay team was also a lifetime-best (24.26).
