Olympic Bid Ends In Oregon
EUGENE, ORE. -- A bid to make the United States Olympic Team
this summer ended on Friday (June 29) for Butler assistant track
and cross country coach Mason Cathey. The Butler coach placed
11th in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase at the U. S.
Olympic Trials being held in Eugene, Oregon.
Emma Coburn of Colorado won the women’s steeplechase with a
time of 9:32.78. Cathey, who placed third in her heat of the
steeplechase prelims, finished the finals with a time of
9:54.07.
Coburn will represent the U. S. in the steeplechase, along with
Bridget Franek of Nike/Oregon TC Elite and collegiate teammate
Shalaya Kipp. Franek finished second on Friday with a time of
9:35.62, while Kipp was third in 9:35.73.
Butler will have a presence at this summer’s Olympic
Games. Former Butler track and cross country standouts Scott
Overall and Ava Hutchinson both will be competing in the Olympic
marathon in London. Overall will be running for host Great
Britain, while Hutchinson is a member of Ireland’s team.
